The "charge to 80%, never to 100%" advice that circulates everywhere is genuinely correct, but only for NMC batteries, the chemistry used in most long-range and premium EVs.

For LFP batteries, increasingly common in budget EVs, Tesla's Standard Range models, and BYD's entire lineup, the advice flips: manufacturers actively recommend charging to 100% and doing so at least weekly, because LFP's flatter voltage curve makes it harder for the battery management system to accurately estimate charge level without that regular full calibration.


Check your owner's manual or the vehicle's on-screen settings to confirm which chemistry you have before you set a daily charge limit. Getting this backwards, capping an LFP battery at 80% indefinitely, doesn't damage the battery, but it does mean less usable range and a battery gauge that becomes progressively less accurate over time.

The Apartment Charging Question Nobody's Fully Answered Yet

If you live in an apartment, the honest answer right now is: it's complicated, and it's about to get less complicated, but isn't there yet. NSW's proposed Right to Charge reforms would significantly simplify how strata committees approve EV charger installations, removing a major barrier for apartment residents wanting to charge at home.

As of now, the bill is still before the NSW Legislative Council, not yet passed into law.


In the meantime, a few things are already true regardless of which state you're in. You can generally switch electricity retailers or move to a time-of-use tariff without needing landlord or strata approval, that's just a change to your own electricity contract.

Installing an actual charging point, however, still requires permission, since it involves shared building infrastructure. If you're in an apartment without approved charger access yet, a portable Level 1 charger plugged into any standard power point in your allocated parking, where permitted, is a legitimate stopgap, just plan around the slower charge rate.
