If you've been chasing the biggest range number on the spec sheet, there's a good chance you're paying for kilometres you'll never use.
Most Australians drive far less than they think, and the gap between "range that sounds reassuring" and "range you'll actually need" is bigger than most buyers realise. Here's what the data actually says, plus how that changes if you're weighing a full electric vehicle against a plug-in hybrid.

How Much Range Do You Actually Need
The average Australian drives somewhere between 33 and 38 kilometres a day, depending on which study you look at. That's a remarkably consistent figure across ABS data, industry reports and the Electric Vehicle Council's own numbers. At that rate, even the shortest-range EVs on sale in Australia today, typically starting around 250km, cover a full week of normal driving before you'd need to plug in at all.
Worth building in a buffer, though. Real-world range typically runs 10 to 20% below the official WLTP figure, once you account for air conditioning, hills, cold mornings and normal driving style rather than laboratory conditions.
So a 300km-claimed EV is more realistically a 240-270km EV day to day, still comfortably more than most people need in a week.

Where More Range Actually Matters
Range genuinely matters more if you regularly drive long distances between charging opportunities, live somewhere without reliable public charging, or take frequent road trips outside major charging corridors.
For a Sydney or Brisbane commuter doing the average daily distance, a long-range flagship EV is usually solving a problem you don't have.
BEV vs PHEV: How Range Needs Change the Calculation
If your actual driving pattern doesn't need a long-range BEV, it's worth asking the follow-up question: does it need to be a full EV at all, or would a plug-in hybrid suit you better?

The honest verdict on PHEVs: they make genuine financial sense only if you plug in consistently. A PHEV that never gets charged is carrying the weight and complexity of two drivetrains while getting the running-cost benefit of neither, closer to petrol-equivalent costs than most buyers expect.
Buy or Avoid: The Verdict
Buy a mid-range BEV if: your daily driving sits within the national average, you can charge at home or work regularly, and you'd rather save on the purchase price than pay extra for range you won't use.
Buy a long-range BEV or consider a PHEV instead if: you regularly drive beyond typical commuting distances, live somewhere with patchy public charging, or genuinely can't charge at home consistently and want petrol backup for longer trips.
