Jaecoo J5 EV Australia: Is It Worth Buying Now the Launch Deal Has Ended?

3 min read

You've seen the number, $36,990 drive-away, and wondered what you give up. Fair question. The J5 EV is one of the best-selling plug-in cars in the country, yet the brand is new, the safety rating is missing and the headline price was a time-limited offer. Here's what you get, what you don't, and what to ask the dealer before you sign.

The Jaecoo J5

Key Facts: Jaecoo J5 EV Australia

  • Checked: 1 November 2026.

  • Price: $36,990 drive-away on the Summit, an offer that closed to new orders on 31 October 2026. Manufacturer's list price is $35,990 before on-road costs.

  • Battery and range: 58.9kWh LFP battery (lithium iron phosphate, a durable, cheaper chemistry), 402km claimed on the WLTP lab test.

  • Charging: up to 130kW DC, 30 to 80 per cent in about 28 minutes. AC charging is 6.6kW single phase or 10.3kW three phase.

  • Warranty: 8 years, unlimited kilometres on the car and the battery.

  • Boot: 480 litres, plus a small front storage area.

  • Safety rating: none published by ANCAP that we could find.

  • Yes if: you want an affordable commuter with about 400km of claimed range, you charge at home and you accept a new brand's unproven resale value.

  • No if: an ANCAP rating is a must, or you want one-pedal driving, built-in navigation and a spare wheel.

Why everyone is talking about it

The EV Council's 10-year report lists the J5 as the fifth best-selling plug-in car in Australia over the past 12 months, at roughly 6,000 sales.

That's a lot of buyers for a brand most people couldn't pronounce two years ago.

The reason is simple: the price sat well below most rivals in its size class.

What you actually get

It's a compact SUV with a single front motor producing 155kW and 288Nm, and a 0 to 100km/h claim of 7.7 seconds. Reviewers describe the ride as comfortable, the interior as fresh and the front seats as heated and cooled.

For the money, it's well equipped.

What you give up

Area

What reviewers found

Regenerative braking

Clunky. Even the strongest setting doesn't allow one-pedal driving.

Handling

Soft and a bit heavy through corners.

Navigation

No built-in satellite navigation. Use phone projection.

Spare wheel

None.

Cabin

Materials don't match cars costing twice as much. Few physical controls.

Real-world range

Reviewers report about 350km in real driving, against 402km claimed.

Long-term

Reliability, resale value and dealer support are unproven for a new brand.

The biggest question mark is safety. We couldn't find an ANCAP rating for the J5 EV on the maker's page or in the reviews we read. Jaecoo's own page lists seven airbags and active safety tech, but that's not the same as an independent crash test. Check ancap.com.au before you commit.

What the end of the offer means

The $36,990 drive-away price applied to orders placed between 1 and 31 October 2026, on the Summit with no metallic paint or options, while stocks last.

We haven't been able to confirm what the price is from 1 November. Jaecoo extended this offer several times through the year, so a further extension is possible, but nothing is guaranteed.

Ask for the drive-away figure in writing.

There is also a separate novated lease offer: 10 per cent off the $35,990 list price for employees whose employer offers a novated lease through an approved provider, with no end date listed. That price excludes rego, CTP, stamp duty and dealer delivery.

Jaecoo J5 EV : Buy If / Avoid If

Buy if you want an affordable commuter with a 400km claimed range, you charge at home, and you're comfortable with a new brand's unproven resale value.

Buy if your employer offers a novated lease, because the list price discount makes the maths easier.

Avoid if an ANCAP rating is a deal-breaker for you, you want one-pedal driving, or you need built-in navigation and a spare wheel.

Avoid if you can only buy at the old drive-away price. Confirm the current price before you plan anything.
